Wetsuits: Protection Against Cold and Abrasions Underwater

While surfing, diving and snorkelling in the sea, comfort is the most important thing for sure. At the same time safety is also essential. There are many different types of gear that provide comfort and safety including the wetsuit. As we know, the wetsuit has become an inevitable part of any diverse equipment as it protects them from absorption and cold temperature. It’s not just providing thermal insulation but it also helps to prevent injuries that can happen underwater or undersea. Towers can also make informed decisions about the best suit and spend quality time under the sea enjoying nature.

Thermal Insulation – How Wetsuits Work

Wetsuits keep the divers warm in a cold environment with the help of thermal insulation. The construction and the material of any wetsuit are what gives it its insulation properties. The wetsuits are made from Neoprene ( it’s a synthetic rubber form known for its thermal properties ). 18 layers of water are trapped against the diver’s skin by neoprene that makes it insulating.

The fibre of neoprene lets the water sheep into tiny spaces when the wetsuit is worn. By heating up the water the diver creates a layer of warmth that acts as a warm barrier in the cold water around the diver. Due to its material, the warm water doesn’t dissipate faster and that keeps the diver comforts in the deep water.

Protection Against Abrasions and Injuries

Moreover, it provides heat wetsuit protection from abrasions and injuries while you are under the sea. As we have discussed, wetsuits are made from neoprene as they are beneficial for durability and flexibility as per the standard. Divers maybe get exposed to uneven surfaces while exploring the sea and underwater world and here the wetsuit protects you from getting scrap and cuts.

Choosing the Right Wetsuit

When it comes to underwater activities it is very important to pick the right wetsuit for yourself. This way you will be having enough comfort with protection. There are few things that you should consider while choosing the best wetsuit.

  • Wetsuits are available in different thicknesses and usually measured in millimetres. It’s always a good option to wear a thicker suit this way you can ensure the best protection but they are less flexible. Depending on the water temperature and your personal choice you can choose the thickness.
  • Wetsuits are also available in different types of styles. For example full suits, shorties and two pieces. I would suggest you to wear a full suit when you are about to dive under the water and it’s cold too. My shorts are a better option for the warm water and if you are about to dive on the surface level only.
  • For the best performance, you will be needing a well-fitted wetsuit. If it’s too tight it will be really uncomfortable for doing any moment or if it’s too loose there will be less insulation.
  • There are two types of zippers on wetsuits: back zipper and chest zipper. Wearing a bag zipper is easier because a leches zipper offers better flexibility.
  • Water ingress and durability of the wetsuit are affected by seams. Glued-in line stitch seams are a better option for colder water while flat lock seams are good for warm water.
